CLAYTON — St. Louis County Councilman Ernie Trakas has invited the chair of a local tourism board to explain millions of dollars in cost overruns for St. Louis' convention center expansion project.

If Steven O'Loughlin, chairman of the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission, doesn't appear willingly, Trakas will ask the council to subpoena him, the Republican councilman wrote in a letter to O'Loughlin dated Monday.

"I believe it is not only imperative, but your responsibility to appear before the council," Trakas wrote.

The hearing is scheduled for July 9.

The announcement follows a difficult few years for Ratcliffe as the face of a project so far over budget that it’s not clear it can be completed.

In an online meeting mistakenly left open to the public, St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission Vice Chair Dave Robert spoke of trouble with sales, staff morale and a need to make a change at the top.
