Gateway Beer
Webster Groves’ Joel Bittle wants to trick people into learning about St. Louis. He’s doing it through the lens of one of the city’s most prominent industries — beer. Jo Bittle, a California native who moved to St. Louis in 2000, has written a book, "Gateway Beer: St.Louis Craft Brewing in the Shadow of Anheuser-Busch," which details the history of brewing in St. L. Louis and the stories of notable craft breweries such as Schlafly, Urban Chestnut, Perennial and 4 Hands. Bittle's book, which was originally started as a project during the pandemic, was released on Oct. 20, 2026. The book details the city's history of beer manufacturing, manufacturing, and football teams winning Super Bowls, but also the resurgence of St. St. Louie's beer industry, which has grown massively in the last few years, continues to climb as craft beer industry continues to grow. Bittittle credits craft beer drinkers' willingness to try everything, as opposed to "macro" beer drinkers who choose their brews based on brand loyalty. He also notes that while craft beer makes up a fraction of the industry, it is still a growing industry.
