Railroad crossing inspections begin to reinstate St. Louis ‘quiet zones’ after overdue crossing updates

The Federal Railroad Administration suspended quiet zone status in St. Louis due to overdue updates. The city said all physical upgrades are complete and inspections have begun. The City of St. Louis is reinstating 'quiet zones' after a month of late-night train horns due to overdue updates to railroad crossing infrastructure. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has begun inspections, which will continue until the end of the week. Since 2005, St.Louis had been an FRA-designated quiet zone, meaning trains passing through were not required to ring their horns. The city has completed physical upgrades to all railroad crossings, installing larger railroad crossing signs and repainting stop bars. The FRA has already inspected 35 crossings and will reinstate quiet zones on a corridor-by-corridor basis to reduce train horn noise as soon as possible. Geographic confusion has also complicated the process of upgrading railroad crossings.
