Missouri auditor to investigate St. Louis County property tax appeals process

The investigation will examine how appeals are assigned to two boards and whether the system treats property tax owners fairly, Fitzpatrick says. The Missouri state auditor, Scott Fitzpatrick, is investigating St. Louis County's property tax appeals process after whistleblowers raised concerns that it may be unfair to homeowners and potentially violate county ordinances. The St.Louis County Board of Equalization is responsible for responding to property tax appeal and is set to create a second Board of Equation in 2021 with the intention of speeding up the process. State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick is investigating if assignments to one board versus the other affect how likely taxpayers would be able to win their cases. The auditor's office is requesting records by Nov. 6 that show how many appeals each board receives, how many cases are assigned to each board, how those assignments are made and the outcomes of the appeals. If county officials refuse to cooperate, Fitzpatrick could issue subpoenas to obtain documents related to the investigation.
