As global temperatures rise, here’s how a St. Louis group wants to combat urban heat
Local organizations are stepping up to help combat rising urban heat. A St. Louis group, the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, has been working on a new strategy to combat urban heat since fall 2024. The group has sought community input and has compiled a list of over 75 potential local-level policy changes. The main concern was rising utility bills and the physical health of elderly neighbors and homeless people. The lack of trees and green spaces in urban areas is also a concern, particularly for urban heat island effect. The MCE is also working with Forest ReLeaf to address this issue. The final list of policies includes updated zoning policies for the city and recommendations for data centers.
