Homeowner targeted in key fob car theft. Here’s how to protect yourself
A car was recently stolen in the St. Louis area and the victim believes thieves used a technique called a relay attack to take it. Homeowner Sherri Brown's 2017 Nissan Maxima was stolen from her home in the St. Louis area, using a technique called a relay attack where thieves use a device that captures the signal from a key fob inside to place it on a car parked in the driveway. The car was locked and the key fobs were inside the house. The thief could then use a signal-blocking holder, which is sold online by Home Depot and Best Buy. If key fkeys are not being protected, they should be kept far away from the exterior of the home. The theft comes at a time when Brown has to cut costs due to extra expenses. St.Louis Metropolitan Police Department crime statistics show vehicle thefts are down 13% so far this year.
