Why a decades-old community arts program in St. Louis has gone independent

Almost 30 years after its creation, the Community Arts Training Institute has become an independent nonprofit. The Community Arts Training Institute (CAT) in St. Louis, a decades-old community arts program, has become an independent nonprofit to focus on social and civic change. The institute, which has been under the Regional Arts Commission for 30 years, aims to expand its work towards making social and civil change. Co-Director Pacia Elaine Anderson, who served as the institute’s program director from 2003 to 2017, said independence was a logical next step for an entity born as a program at RAC. The application window for the next cohort of CAT fellows is open. Weiss hopes the independent nonprofit will give the institute greater visibility in the community and a how-to series Anderson is creating to support this goal.
