New grant brings autonomous railcars to Missouri

Columbia will soon have autonomous railcars running on the approximately 21-mile Columbia Terminal Railroad, or COLT line. Columbia, Missouri, has received a $16.2 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration to install autonomous railcars on the city's 21-mile Columbia Terminal Railroad line. The grant will fund improvements, safety upgrades, and a partnership with Intramotev, an innovative technology company based in St. Louis that builds self-driving railcars to transport goods. Don Soffer, marketing lead at Intramotv, said each railcar has an onboard perception system that can detect obstacles on the track. The partnership with Columbia Utilities has already begun and existing staff will be taught to operate the new system. The current grant runs for three years.
