St. Louis Park School District staff provide update on digital learning
The use of educational technology in the classroom continues to be an evolving topic of conversation among school district leaders, students and parents. St. Louis Park School District staff have provided an update on the use of educational technology in classrooms. The district's executive director of information services, Tom Marble, stated that the district had adjusted Google settings to restrict sharing between schools and limit email recipients after hearing concerns from staff at the middle school and high school. He also revealed that the department is piloting a new tool at the high school that allows teachers more control over which sites students can visit and when. Megan Pershica, director of the district's learning and innovation department, also mentioned plans to redesign the department's media specialist role into a digital learning specialist role. The department will work to encourage the intentional use of technology for learning rather than being a distraction, particularly when it comes to cell phones. There are ongoing discussions about a potential ban on cell phones and smartwatches in grades K-8 while restrictions on cell phone use in high school classrooms.
