Belleville aldermen vote to terminate solar farm lease
The controversial project is still being litigated in St. Clair County Circuit Court. Belleville City Council has voted to terminate its lease with Texas-based Belleville Solar, which had planned to build a solar farm in an unused section of Mount Hope Cemetery. The company had already withdrawn from the project in August, but the matter is still being litigated in St. Clair County Circuit Court. Alderpersons went into closed session before approving a motion that authorizes City Attorney Garrett Hoerner to provide notice of default and/or termination to Belleville solar, while reserving all available remedies to the company. Opponents argue that the project violates Illinois laws that prohibit commercial operations and protect cemetery land. The city bought the cemetery for $1 in a 2024 foreclosure sale and helped the solar companies apply for millions in state incentives.
