ST. LOUIS — Prosecutors charged a man Thursday with beating his girlfriend over the course of multiple days, eventually killing her.
Eric D. Johnson, 41, is facing a count of first-degree murder after police said he approached a woman in downtown St. Louis and asked her to help his girlfriend, 35-year-old Cherish Lappin. Johnson said he had beaten Lappin with his hands and a gun.
A witness told investigators they saw Johnson beating Lappin at least twice in an abandoned home during the days leading up to the Feb. 6 encounter downtown. Both Lappin and Johnson were homeless, police said.
Lappin was taken to a hospital, where she died Feb. 14. Authorities were never able to speak with her because of her injuries, police said.
Johnson was ordered to be held in jail without bond.
