Freeze and frost possible in some areas early Friday west of St. Louis

Clearing skies and diminishing winds will allow temperatures to drop to around or below freezing in areas west of metro St. Louis. A freeze warning is in effect for Pike, Lincoln, Gasconade, Warren, Franklin, Crawford, Washington and Phelps counties in Missouri from midnight until 8 a.m. Friday. Temperatures are expected to drop to around or below freezing in areas west of metro St. Louis. This comes after a strong storm system brought heavy rain and strong storms to Missouri and Illinois earlier in the week. The system responsible for all weather changes is slowly drifting east across the Great Lakes. As the wind decreases, temperatures will drop north and west of the St Louis metro area, with temperatures expected to fall into the upper 20s to around 30 over the western portion of the 5 On Your Side viewing area. While Friday morning is likely to be the coldest morning of the week, frost may be more likely Saturday morning, especially in Illinois. Over the weekend, warmer weather is expected to return, with rain chances increasing late Saturday night into Sunday.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. — In the wake of a strong storm system that heavy rain and strong storms to Missouri and Illinois earlier this week, colder air has returned. The large weather system responsible for all the weather changes this week is slowly drifting east across the Great Lakes Thursday afternoon. Cloudy, breezy conditions have limited how cold temperatures could fall the past couple of nights.

As skies clear and the wind diminishes Thursday night into early Friday, temperatures will drop to around or just below freezing north and west of the St. Louis metro area. By early Friday morning, temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 20s to around 30 over the western portion of the 5 On Your Side viewing area.

A freeze warning is in effect for Pike, Lincoln, Gasconade, Warren, Franklin, Crawford, Washington and Phelps counties in Missouri from midnight until 8 a.m. Friday. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29 degrees are expected. Frost may form in areas where the wind diminishes.

While the growing season is young, much-above-average temperatures in February resulted in the early growth of some sensitive plants. Newly planted perennials and any annual tender plants may require protection. While Friday morning is likely to be the coldest morning this week from St. Louis and points west, frost may be more likely Saturday morning, especially in Illinois.

Warmer weather will return over the weekend. Rain chances will increase late Saturday night into Sunday, especially Sunday morning. While a few rumbles of thunder are possible, strong to severe thunderstorms are not expected.
