ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Major League Baseball revealed Wednesday that both the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will wear special throwback uniforms for their June 20th game at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

The uniforms the Giants and Cardinals will wear are in tribute to the San Francisco Sea Lions and the St. Louis Stars, respectively.

The St. Louis Stars won three championships as part of the Negro National League from 1922 to 1931. Players that played for the club included Cool Papa Bell, Willie Wells and Mule Suttles. All three players are in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Cardinals have previously honored the Stars on multiple occasions, wearing replica uniforms to honor the Stars over the years. Most recently, the Cardinals wore the uniforms in Sept. 9, 2022, which saw the Cardinals lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-2.

Rickwood Field was the home of the Birmingham Black Barons from 1924 to 1960. The Blacks Barons was the Negro Leagues team where baseball legend Willie Mays got his professional start in 1948.

The Black Barons will be honored two days prior to the Giants and Cardinals June 20 game matchup on June 18 when the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and the Montgomery Biscuits, the Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, face off on June 18 at Rickwood Field as the MiLB at Rickwood Field game.

Like the Cardinals and Giants, both the Biscuits and Barons will also wear uniforms to pay tribute to the Negro Leagues.
